Where Do I Start? An Introduction to Anti-Aging Skincare Routines.

If you’re reading this, odds are you’re not entirely happy with your current anti-aging skincare routine. You’ve probably tried product after product, always looking for that “miracle” cream or serum that will magically restore you to a more youthful look.

The truth is that anti-aging skincare is really quite basic. There are only a few major processes. There are lots of products out there that try to get there by utilizing various ingredients, but in the end, the goal is the same — or at least it should be, because younger looking skin truly comes down to just a few things. I’ll list them here and then go over them more fully, one by one, as I continue this series in later blog posts.

1.  Exfoliate away the old (and old looking) skin. By now, you’ve probably aware of alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids. They’ve been around for a while. The problem is that not all of them work. I’ll get into this later in a more detailed post. But exfoliation is critical to younger looking skin and  definitely needs to be included in any anti-aging skincare routine.

2. Remodel the skin. This is crucial. It doesn’t help very much to exfoliate away old cells if the new skin that rises to the surface is simply a replicate of the older skin that was above it. The goal is to get the new cells to act more like they did when they were younger so that they also look more like they did when they were younger. This is the principle of skin rejuvenation or remodeling. Again, there are many ingredients and products that can help you accomplish this, but I’ll save that for later on in this series.

3. Target specific areas of concern. This is slightly different from skin remodeling in that the changes are not necessarily permanent, but more cosmetic. For example, DMAE Amine is wonderful for lifting and tightening sagging skin, but it doesn’t actually change skin in any permanent way.  What that means is that you need to keep using the product to maintain the desired effects. For most women, this isn’t an issue because the benefits are worth taking a couple minutes each day to apply a DMAE Amine serum. Some women may not need targeted treatment products or you may only need them until you see what results are achieved with products that actually remodel the skin. Regardless, target issue treatment serums do work well and have a significant role in achieving younger looking skin.

4. Protect the skin from further damage. The fanciest products in the world won’t help if you keep subjecting yourself to the same environmental damage over and over again. Skin aging is not just a normal process caused by, well, getting older. Sure, some of it is. DNA doesn’t replicate exactly anymore, skin’s natural remodelin and repair processes slow down. But a good 80% of what we perceive as “aging skin” is actually due to UV damage. Yes, the sun. Sorry. The most important products in this category are antioxidants and sunscreens, with an emphatic emphasis on sunscreens. In fact, if a great sunscreen was the only thing you added to your routine — or the only anti-aging product you used, period – you’d probably stop at least 80% of further aging. You may not reverse what already exists, but you’d stop it from getting worse. And if you’re doing #1 and #2 above, you need to hold onto those gains by protecting your skin from just getting damages all over again. Again, more on this as I continue the series.

So, yup, that’s right: there are really only 4 basic steps to younger looking skin! What are the ingredients and products that help you do this? There’s a plethora out there and I’ll be going into them in detail in upcoming posts, so check back often.
